Zinc aluminum magnesium coating is a ternary alloy coating whose main component is zinc, in addition, the content of aluminum and magnesium is between 1.5 and 8% (of which the magnesium content is not less than 0.2%). Why is the ratio of aluminum to magnesium specified in the European standard zinc-aluminum-magnesium coating a range of 1.5~8%, rather than a fixed value such as the aluminum content of aluminum plated zinc coating 55%?

Why is the ratio of aluminum to magnesium specified in the European standard zinc-aluminum-magnesium coating a range of 1.5~8%, rather than a fixed value such as the aluminum content of aluminum plated zinc coating 55%?

This is because the steel mill applied for trademarks and patents after investing a lot of research and development funds to develop new products, so the steel mill adjusted the composition in order to avoid the patent, which also led to slight differences in the proportion of zinc, aluminum and magnesium coating components of different manufacturers. These products with fine-tuned coating components are usually considered to be "zinc, aluminum and magnesium coated steel plates", so the European standard has set a range in order to "take the overall situation into account" when it is revised.

2. Classification of zinc, aluminum and magnesium coating

The magnesium Mg content in most of the coatings is less than 3%, and according to the different aluminum content of the coating, the zinc aluminum magnesium coating is divided into:

(1) Low aluminum zinc aluminum magnesium coating, aluminum content: 1-3.5%, the coating is formed by adding certain aluminum magnesium and other elements on the basis of hot dip galvanizing

(2) Aluminum zinc aluminum magnesium coating, aluminum content: 5~11%

(3) High aluminum zinc aluminum magnesium coating, aluminum content :55%, the coating is formed by adding magnesium and other elements on the basis of hot aluminum zinc plating.

3. Characteristics of zinc, aluminum and magnesium coating

Compared with traditional coatings such as hot dip galvanizing, galvanized aluminum and zinc-iron alloy, zinc-aluminum-magnesium coating has better corrosion resistance.
(1) Because the zinc-aluminum alloy coating is relatively thin and dense, it is not easy to flake the coating

(2) The corrosion products will flow and wrap the incision, so the protection performance of the incision and the defect is better

(3) It also has good corrosion resistance in some etching environments (such as animal husbandry, coastal areas, etc.);

(4) It can replace some of the less demanding stainless steel, or the application scenarios such as galvanized after processing, which can simplify the user's processing process.
